Tesco to break GTA IV street date?

Tesco to break GTA IV street date?
20-04-2008 13:00 | 10 comments | Console |

I very much doubt this will actually happen as point of sale posters are often printed months beforehand and especially regarding games, with inaccurate information, but just in case.... someone has spotted a few posters in UK Tesco stores stating the sale of GTA IV will begin April 25th according to PSBeyond.

Still, it may be worth taking a visit to Tesco and checking it out. Personally, if it's not on the shelves it would be worth asking: "Do you have GTA IV in? I noticed other retailers are already selling it (blatant lie Embarassed ).... can you grab me one please." Gotta be worth a try.

Grand Theft Auto IV is due for release April 29th (officially).

Today saw the release of firmware 2.30 for the Sony Playstation 3. This update consists of a change to the Playstation Store regarding functionality and layout. The Playstation Store will no longer use the PS3's built in browser, resulting in faster navigation. There has also been a change to the layout of the Store providing improved navigation and categorization.

Personally, I'm impressed with the Playstation Store update and find it much easier to use. Please post your thoughts...

Sequels for Earthworm Jim, MDK...

Sequels for Earthworm Jim, MDK...

An Interplay Press Release (thanks Bluesnews) tells of the company's intent to produce sequels for a handful of games that should provoke some warm memories. Earthworm Jim, Dark Alliance, Descent, MDK and a MMO Fallout are specifically mentioned.

Interplay sold off other IP, notably Baldurs Gate and Fallout (retaining the option to do a MMO), to improve an extremely poor balance sheet, which is now barely in the red. That still doesn't allow for a lot of working capital, the company will need to work hard just to obtain finance and I doubt much grade A talent will want to risk their mortgage to Interplay's recent history.

That said, if they manage to pull though and reverse the fortunes of the ailing company, I daresay they'll be in the right mood for the humour of MDK and Earthworm Jim.

OK here it is, the first public beta of Meltdown!

Scenario

In this map we see the GDF trying to put an end to a major Strogg facility located in a once grand city. In order to reach the facility the GDF must first disable the shield generator to by pass the numerous shielded barriers leading to the facility. Once done the GDF must overload the facility's main reactor with additional energy cells, 2 in total should be sufficient for total meltdown.

Objectives

1. Destroy the Strogg Shield Generator to gain access to the facility.
2. Hack the Strogg Security Controls to gain access to the energy cell.
3. Deliver the energy cell to the reactor intake to cause total meltdown.

No doubt there will be much banter and laughter along with bits and pieces of "OMG you TART!". BF2 players out there, please feel free to join us in the Battlefield 2 channel of GamersNation's Ventrilo.

Wanted: criminals to blame games for cash

StarNow, a website that essentially carries adverts for acting jobs to "the online talent community" carries a listing for:

Quote:
A national newspaper wants your story and will pay hundreds of pounds to the right person.

Write a few lines about how computer games turned you to crime and if it's something we like, we'll call you straight back.

The advert is dated 27 March, the day the Byron Report was released. Byron has complained to MCV about the "plain wrong" assertions found in media coverage of her report.

The advert also comes on the back of the infamous Ann Diamond article from the Daily Mail, which holds about as much journalistic value as their photoshop skills. I'll take this opportunity to note that the Daily Mail used this article to replace a relatively sensible one which I had linked to previously, with a robots.txt file preventing retrieval of the original from cache.

Tanya Byron's review "Safer Children in a Digital World" has been released to the public, it is available in PDF form at the Department for Children, School and Families. It does run to 226 pages though it is reasonably easy-going.

If you've been browsing the news stands today you could be forgiven for thinking that gaming is the new smoking, though bypass the hysteric headlines and gory Manhunt screenshots and you'll find even the Daily Mail seem to have grudgingly accepted that the problem is mostly about educating parents [update: the article on that url has been replaced and is now back to form]. The BBC and the Guardian have much better coverage.

After a busy day at work I'm not going to pretend to have read and digested the entire report. After a brief scanning however it appears GN's previous comment remains valid. Spong have a reaction from the BBFC (who is set to gain more power/responsibility) while Strategy Informer has one from the ELSPA (which is set to lose).

Whilst I'd encourage any gamer to have a thorough read of a government-backed report that thoroughly supports the views many sensible gamers have long held, if you really can't be bothered I've copied the executive summary after the jump.

The high-profile debate about the worrisome state of PC gaming continues unabated, id Software's Steve Nix has had a turn over on Games Industry.biz. He appears to consider that while the console market has grown to the point where it cannot be ignored, id remain committed to PC gaming and are confident it can support their games. While hardly inspiring optimism for PC gaming, it puts a damper on the diatribe we've been hearing from the more hot-headed corners.

If it's optimism you want, have a read of the comment from Draginol of Stardock. Their latest game, Sins of a Solar Empire, has topped the US games charts despite a dearth of any hype (they were underestimated to the point that they couldn't even get a European distributor), no copy protection and low production costs. They say it is simply due to making games with a normal business perspective: "satisfying the people willing to spend money on your product and less effort on making what others perceive as hot".

EA signs Massive agreement for in-game ads

EA signs Massive agreement for in-game ads
18-03-2008 18:30 | 3 comments | |

EA have extended their deal with Massive (owned by MS) to provide dynamic in-game advertising for Xbox 360 and PC games.

While most of the PR emphasises the benefits to advertisers being able to plan more effectively, it's also clear EA is determined that advertising will bring a substantial source of revenue. There is no indication given of any benefit to consumers, and it's clear more games will be coming with these types of adverts:

Quote:
EA will further expand the opportunities available to advertisers by extending the participation of current titles in the Massive network as well as incorporating additional, highly anticipated games over the course of the deal.

There is the expected references to EA's sports range, and disclosure that they are hard at work bringing the ads to GN's current fave Burnout Paradise. On the other hand, EA told 1Up that "We're never going to put ads in Harry Potter".
